A good upgrade from the Walking Style II IF you want the PC connection January 13, 2010 DWB1873 (Channel Islands) 105 out of 106 found this review helpful
I've been using the other model of this style of pedometer - the Walking Style II. At the time I bought that, this model was not available in the UK as it was being exclusively sold through an online website tied into a fitness plan.
It would appear that deal has now ended and Amazon are able to sell the unit on it's own - a far more attractive option to me as I didn't want to be tied into a subscription just to get a pedometer!
If you are not familiar with the Omron pedometers, they are different in that they use sensors rather than a pendulum to measure steps - this means the units can be put in a pocket, stuffed in a bag - basically put anywhere, and will still register steps. A traditional step counter can only be mounted on a belt or the like.
This means the results are much more accurate and reliable than a standard counter and with no moving parts, there is very little to wear out.
The Pro has all the features of the Style II - calories, steps walked, distance, clock and also remembers the last 7 days on the unit. This unit still resets automatically at midnight each day - you cannot reset the unit. The idea I think is that it's encouraging 10,000 steps a DAY - so it measures the whole day.
It's slightly longer than the Style II - to fit in the USB port I guess.
Which brings me to the biggest difference - you can connect this unit to your computer to keep track of distance walked. The unit itself will show 7 days of history, however it stores 40 days - all of which can be sent to the PC. The software is a little basic in terms of interface and method, however it works well (and on Windows 7 64-bit), keeping track of totals for days, weeks, months and years with graphs for each. You can also set a target for calories, distance, steps etc and it will let you know through smiley faces how you're doing.
This is, potentially, a bit of a gimmick, unless you really are keen to know what you've done. I'm really trying to up my steps and it's been interesting to see both when I walk the most (a definite pattern) but also to see the times where I've not moved at all through just sitting at my desk - not a good thing to be doing!
The box says to ONLY use the USB cable provided - this is rubbish, any USB cable works. Also the unit does not charge from the PC - it uses a normal button type battery - battery life is likely to be around 6 months of normal use if the Style II is anything to go by.
Overall build quality is good, though it looks to be the same plastic as the Style II - I had an issue there in that the face scratches quite badly over time (a long time). I've mitigated that this time by modifying a mobile phone screen protector to fit the stepper.
Overall, highly recommended IF you will use the PC software. If you won't, you're better off getting the Style II - it has the exact same stepper features and is a very good step counter. This unit ONLY adds computer connectivity, nothing more.
Great Aid to Improving Your Fitness February 4, 2010 Deb the card maker (uk) 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
Firstly it is accurate, I used a cheap one when I first bought one and it was not accurate at all. It is very easy to set up, I'm not very good with gadgets but I managed to set it up on my own. You don't need to reset it each day which is a good feature. It is comfortable to wear and it stays in place with the clip and feels secure. I like the way it also counts the aerobic steps which is great if you are trying to get fit. If you use it with the Omron Health Management software you can track your progress and hopefully see your improvement. I think it is very good value for money and would recommend it very highly
Definitely worth the sale price! January 20, 2010 Mrs. Elizabeth A. Bailey (Luton UK) 28 out of 29 found this review helpful
I agree with the previous reviewer - this is a generally good quality piece of kit and if it is important to you to measure steps, which it is for me, the software is simple but does all you should need. I was very pleased to get it in the sale but it's miles (no pun intended) better than any other step counter I have had so I wouldn't have balked at the full price.
Very impressed - a pedometer which actually works! February 25, 2010 Ms. M. J. Pratt (Wales, U.K.) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have owned a lot of pedometers in my lifetime, and without fail have found every one of them to be hopelessly inaccurate (it's so tiresome when you walk the dog for half an hour and it says you did 3 steps, then you take the pedometer off and the movement involved in doing so adds 20 steps...). I was sceptical when I read the description, but these Omron pedometers genuinely are different. So far as I understand it, 'normal' pedometers have a little pendulum inside them (which explains why you can add loads of 'steps' by shaking them!), whereas these ones have different sorts of sensors inside - no idea how they work, but they really do. Unlike with standard pedometers, it is not necessary to position them carefully on your waistband to make sure they pick up your movement, these ones work fine even in a pocket or a bag. The odd step isn't counted of course, nothing is perfect, but I did count and check for quite some time (annoyed the dog no end!) and it was only a dozen or so steps out for a fairly lengthy walk.
A nice little feature is that it keeps a separate count of your aerobic steps (number of steps and time taken), where it defines aerobic as 'at a constant pace for a set number of minutes' - I think it's ten minutes but can't find where I read that now so am not positive. The display on the pedometer will show you all the details of your activity for 7 days, and will store more than that (41 days) in the memory to download to the provided computer software if you so desire. It also shows the number of calories burned (estimated from the weight and stride length which you input in the initial setup - you WILL need to read the manual to do this. Yes, even you men!). There is also a little digital clock at the bottom of the screen which I have found surprisingly handy.
Don't hesitate - if you want a pedometer get one of these (or the model below if you don't want the extra logging and computer software) - you won't be disappointed.
BEST PEDOMETERS - BRILLIANT FOR AEROBIC WORKOUTS April 15, 2010 Crafty Marie (Cambs) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've had so many different pedometers but I have to say that Omron really make the best. In fact, it is the ONLY pedometer I have found which can accurately count my aerobic steps and not just walking steps.
The extra safety clip is fantastic as it means you won't drop or lose your pedometer as I have with cheaper versions which can too easily ping off the top of your trouser band or pocket.
If you do aerobics, this is a brilliant pedometer as it will show your aerobic steps separately from your walking steps so you can keep track of the exercise you are doing. On the pedometer screen itself you can see a week's worth of stored data. But if you plug it into your PC, you can keep track of your progress over time using the supplied software which is a fantastic idea.
Don't waste money buying cheaper pedometers as you will be unsatisfied with them. This is my second Omron pedometer that I've bought (old one has been given to hubby) and I love it. It's the best you will get.
