Intial Impressions - Excellent January 6, 2010 O. MICHAEL (UK-Peru-Japan) 94 out of 94 found this review helpful
I bought this to replace my 3 year old Asus. When you compare the Spec and the cost - there is no comparison, this computer is great value. I think you would be very hard pressed to find a similar set up below the 400 pound mark. As mentioned in the other reviews this doesnt have a camera or mic. Which initially was disappointing, as I really wanted to only carry around the one piece of equipment - now I need to buy a webcam - not a major expense these days.
I have to say I had considered sending the machine back as the webcam was important, but once I turned on the machine and started to use it I thought otherwise. From getting the machine out the box, to using it and surfing the web took less than 7 minutes! Which is impressive. It is also very fast compared to my old Asus machine.
I think the build of the machine is very good, the case looks nice. The screen is great - very nice colours and after viewing a DVD for a few minutes I impressed with the picture quality. At the moment 48hours into owning it I dont have any real complaints. If you can get beyond the webcam issue - this is a great computer.
A couple of things I dont like are the fact you have to make your own Backup discs before you really start to presonalise your machine - this takes 4 DVDs as far as I can tell - so be prepared and have them ready to burn as soon as you get it out the box. All the software for burning is preinstalled which is good. Windows 7 looks nice but I really wanted the classic Start menu and explorer, which I dont think you can configure with settings - but thats progress I guess. This is for me, at any rate, a big laptop and you get a full size keyboard with number pad to the right. Didnt really notice that, when I placed the order, and it takes a little getting used to. Also the mousepad is offset to the left but placed centrally below the qwerty keyboard area, which is a nice touch.
Overall I am impressed. A great machine at a great price - I would recommend it to anyone, but be prepared - place an order for some blank DVD's and a webcam at the same time as the computer.
Top Spec low price January 18, 2010 P. W. Wishart 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Added my five stars worth to balance the silly one star surely you check the spec carefully if you see what looks like a bargain. THere aren't many laptops that offer a whopping 500 GB of hard disc. One slight problem for some might be only two USB ports - enough for me! In use fast no crashing no problems!
The easiest set uip ever January 18, 2010 Mr. Alan Chivers (Crawley, UK) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I've set up a lot of computers for various friends over the years but this one was so quick and easy I found it difficult to believe. I bought it for my wife who uses a computer for shopping, e-mails, networking, watching DVDs and for storing her photographs, she is an excellent photographer so has thousands of images. It really is plug in and go. It comes with a trial version of McAfee's security software so you can be safe on line from the beginning. There are also trial versions of other programs including Microsoft Office if you want these.
The screen is 16:9 widescreen format and very bright and sharp and ideal for playing video from DVD. The hard disc is a massive 500GB so there is plenty of room available for storage. There is 4GB of RAM and a 64bit dual core AMD chip so it is very fast both to boot up and in use. What more could you want?
Well if you want a web cam then it doesn't have one installed. This didn't bother us but it does some people. The documentation supplied is basic in the extreme and although anyone can still set it up you just might want some help in finding the various controls. I don't know if there could be problems with some equipment needing new 64bit drivers because ours is only connected to the internet. However for the price we paid and for the uses it will be put to this is a 5* piece of kit. It is well made and quiet in use the speakers don't give a lot of volume, laptop speakers don't, but there is plenty of good sound through headphones. It is much better than a netbook which would need an external optical drive to let you view DVDs anyway. For the money this one I can recommend.
Great allrounder, easy set up February 27, 2010 Mr K 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had the laptop for about 4 weeks and nothing at all has gone wrong so far. Getting it out the box to finishing set up takes hardly any time at all, really simple even for me. To set it up all I had to do was connect it to my wireless at home with the key code and that was it.
I am 17 years old so wanted a laptop that was fast and had loads of memory for pictures etc. It has a huge hard drive which I really liked. Everything is where you would expect to find it, it is nice having a number keypad too.
I dont care the slightest about no webcam as I would never need one anyway. It only takes about a minute to turn on and off which is helpful, doesnt take ages to load or connect to the internet, does it automatically in a few seconds.
Plays movies really well, nice wide screen and bright display. Sound is loud enough for music in a whole room etc, i never need it on full blast. Looks really nice too, not bulky or ugly at all with smooth sleek lines.
The only thing I would say about it is that the battery isnt very long at all, although as mine is new i suppose you would need to run it down a few times, and it is getting longer each time i use it. The first time i used it it only lasted less than an hour, but when i need it im always near a plug anyway.
The pictures dont illustrate that the laptop is not very tall but is quite wide, so its not as square as a normal computer, this means that you have to scroll down and up a lot and things dont always fit all on the screen but this doesnt matter much.
It is not very heavy, but ive never had a laptop before so cant really compare.
PS- its very dark blue shiny cover, not black as it looks in the picture, but i like this.
Overall I love my new laptop and would highly recommend this one.
works fine July 11, 2010 Peter Bought as a present for my son - he finds it vaey fast and easy to use.
